Random shut down
It's a pleasure to be here and thank you for allowing me to join the forum.

I have an '09 pro star ISX 15 with 800,000 miles on it and it's been very well maintained. The truck was accidentally left outside for two days with the hood open in heavy rain and now it has random shutdown. Could happen with initial startup of the day while idling or even anytime driving down the road. That's real sucky because I have to try and always make sure I'm driving on the right hand lane in case I have to pull off! one time it shut off just by pressing in the tractor air brake release button. After sitting on the side of the road for a few minutes it will start back up and runs smooth as ever.... until it randomly decides to shut down again. It's like a total electrical power loss the dash just goes blank and the engine shuts off.

Any of you pros in here know of this situation can help me please?!!
Thank you, Robert

very, VERY common problem for ISX CM871's. It most likely has nothing to do with it sitting with the hood open.
here is likely your issue...

if it is a bad ecm, then ONLY get one from an OEM stealers$it (it will have a brand new circuit brand in it, even if it is a reman unit) ... and HAVE THE OEM PRE-FLASH IT so that you can just install it and run the engine before taking it out of their building. - This is cheap insurance that you at least get a good one and are not out $2,000+ while making a claim against it if you are unable to flash it or it does not run the truck, etc.

RE: Random shut down
Thank you for your reply rawze.
I tried banging on the ecm case And it wouldn't shut the truck off. We have an unexpectedly warm day here in North Carolina so I was wondering if I should take the cover off of the ACM and maybe just kind of gently press on some of the electronics??
I'm going to attempt to attach a laundry list of 20 codes the truck just threw over a two day 150MILE trip last week and Hopefully see what your opinion is. Thanks again,Robert

RE: Random shut down
ok, so I'm stupid. I was doing the whack a mole thing against the crank case filter housing..... Once I tapped against the actual ecm unit the truck shut right off.

The crank case filter is completely saturated with oil....

RE: Random shut down
ok, Now since this is known is there any emergency trick that can be done if I get stranded on side of road until I'm able to get the new ECM at dealership?

I read somewhere that a guy placed a bag of ice over the unit and was able to drive himself 400 miles home....??!

Those filters are the premature death of overhead cams and having turbo problems
