For those who live in countries that allow such things, 4-5" hole is not nearly big enough. You still get too much heat absorption, lowered exhaust efficiency. Not good for the engine, turbo or wallet long term. 8" minimum is my experience with them,.. leave nothing that can disperse and absorb heat. Otherwise some will have to be going back and re-doing it again later.

Completely remove material inside. The cans are double walled. You won't notice a noise change either. Heat feels the same also. Completely open do it once and be done.

Double Ditto what Magard said. Hollow them right out and be done with it. Mine sounds fine, no noticeable increase in sound, and I have a weed burner.
