The mechanic wants to put it back together with a new gasket. I told him to order a reman head and not to reuse the old one. Not sure what else to do.

not sure about an N14, but on the ISX,.. a head gasket does not fail unless it frets a liner/mid-stop too. - I.E.> counter-boring + new head + new liners required, or it will take out the new head and head gasket again in usually about ~ 30k miles.

The N14 head gaskets have heavy rubber grommets at each cooling passage. You would clearly see if one of them had failed. If the knife edges and protrustions on both liners are ok then I would replace the head.

I'm not sure what the correct term is for the knife edge because I can't see anything about them on Quickserve (even though they are very important to head gasket life). They are the thin ring around the top of each liner. They press a groove into the gasket once you torque the head and can fret away over time.

Cummins called them head gasket shims. P/N 4025353 they were 0.002" shims placed on top the liners to correct low protrusion on one or both of a given pair of cylinders. Or all as a cheap fix.

N14's had issues with fretting too...

Sounds like cavitation. N-14 was know for that. Especially if coolant wasn’t maintained. I had a couple friends that had to rebuild because of that.

If you zoom into this photo you'll see the ring I'm talking about. I suppose you would call it a fire ring.
