What makes cm870 ecm so finicky compared to cm 871

I’m curious what the actual difference is between the two ecms? Why does the files corrupt when pulled out of 870 ecm. Why does 871 ecm seem to be so much tougher? Is it just software or are there actually hard parts that are better? Could a guy with a 870 run an 871 ecm even though the 870 is air actuated and 871 is electrically actuated vgt? Just curious I have an 870 and have been learning about it and I am super interested in these things. I want to learn more.

An 870 can definitely be made to run on an 871 ECM. You do have to replace the air actuated turbo with the 871 electronic actuated turbo though.

The short answer....
Its not just the CM870's. Its any ecm/engine that uses the 'GTIS 3x' programming standard.


Newer engines like CM871 (and newer) are programmed with the 'GTIS 4x' standard. This standard is completely different.

.. and as far as what exactly corrupts in them, how it can be overcome, why you get problems and why they are more 'quirky', Why someone has to edit live ECM data to get one right, (every detail needed), etc...

And yes, I know exactly what, and why they corrupt. It was done on purpose, for a good reason back in the day, although they abandoned that reason with the newer GTIS4 standard.

Those are all questions/discussed that can be explained over on my mumble voice-chat server. If your are (or someone is) tinkering inside the ECM programming or wants to lean more about it, then mumble is the place to be and discuss that side of things...
