black smoke is a sign of too much EGr gas, and/or overfueling and/or not enough air usually. CM870 is notorious for the egr valve sticking and making too much egr gas. It is also known for the turbo not operating correctly as it is air operated. Any drop in supply air to it or clogged screen filter for the air supply and it will have less than normal pressure. The controller also likes to go bad and get out of calibration when they get old too.

I have never worked on a CM870 so maybe others can chime in that have seen those issues. i am just going by what others have said to me in the past.
