I don't know what my opinion is worth to you but I think you've gone about this project in the best possible way. You always seemed to ask for a second opinion where possible, you got a lot of things fixed/looked at while the truck was off the road to save breakdowns, you de-mandated it while the build was fresh, you did a heap of research, etc. Taking a big financial hit should work out better than spending even more but in smaller amounts over time.
