If it does not have a boost gauge, then install one. CM8780's are notorious for boost issues as the turbo arm/ controller starts to get sticky on them. If the boost is falling off or acting up, that could explain the smoke, etc. A 530HP CM870 should be roughly about 37 - 38 psi (38 max) boost sustained under full 100% steady operating load, optimally.

Run the overhead valve adjustment on it and then do an injector leak test on it after its warmed up, and has acted up a bit.

Now that you mention boost….it does have a boost gauge and I’ve never really noticed a problem with the boost but I do know that the turbo air control valve under the air compressor is leaking a bit of air on the top side idk what effects that would have
