Another oil pressure thread
No matter what I do to this engine the oil pressure will not go do any better than
8psi at 600 rpm and 22psi at 1400 rpm period.

Please don’t tell me to change the oil filter, oil, or that damn bypass valve.
Been there done that....................

280 miles on fresh rebuild 06 twim cam 500 hp isx.

The short and skinny

Second new head “reman” hoping that was the issue
New rockers and new shafts
New cams
New cylinder packs
New rod bearings
New main bearings
New oil pump
New oil pump pressure regulator “also shimmed”
New oil pump pick up tube
New oil pump shims
New O-ring for pickup tube to pump seal
New updates oil bypass valve/spring

Yes the piston cooler nozzles are there and in proper working order.
Only thing I haven’t touched yet is the oil cooler.

Cold at start up oil pressure is 45-50 psi at 600 rpm.
This is measured at sensor on driver side and on main oil gally on passenger side with mechanical gauge.
Once water reaches 180 and oil 220 degrees oil pressure drops to
8 psi at 600 rpm and max is 22psi at 1400 rpm.

No matter where you test the oil pressure it’s 8 psi at 600 rpm.

No this is not my only 15 liter 500hp twin cam isx.
I have searched hi and low for any other ideas or fixes to no avail.

HELP

Cumins is no help here either.

RE: Another oil pressure thread
Only thing that can cause oil pressure to be that low (8 psi) that I can think of it that it is likely internally homoraging oil badly somewhere. That or the oil filter is plugged up?

Common mistakes during an inframe just some random guesses here. Some of this it sounds like you have ruled out already ...

* oil pump shimms installed incorrectly (upside down), allowing oil to leak past them. Seen that one a few times.

* bad oil pump? - I have seen new ones with problems sometimes. Taking it apart will reveal what is wrong if it is bad internally.

* Oil filter bypass valve update installed incorrectly or o-ring shear.

* Bad oil cooler?, leaking internally?. not sure if thats possible, Have not had to take mine out yet.

* A spun bearing somewhere.

* incorrectly fitting, or damaged piston cooling nozzles.

* Improper install of one of the rocker/injector shafts or their retaining bolts.

* Bad o-ring in pickup tube, oil pump sucking air?.

* Damaged oil pump.

* Damaged internal passage in engine block?

* Air compressor bypassing too much oil ?

* The lower concept idler gear (first gear above the crank) is also positive pressure feed. A bad bearing / misalignment of sort could cause problem / low oil pressure too. The adjustable idler gear is also positive pressure fed.

* has anyone eliminated the turbo oil feed line temporarily to make sure it is not bleeding too much oil through it?

What brand of rod/main bearings were used? OEM or aftermarket?. if any aftermarket bearings are used ... THEY MUST BE PLASTIGAUGED AND CHECKED BEFORE ASSUMING THEY ARE GOOD!... that is one of the reasons why I will never will use aftermarket bearings or overhaul kits inside an ISX engine. Has Anyone plasitgauged the bearings for excess clearances?.

AND THEN there is the well known issue of ISX engines having alternate size rod/main bearings in them randomly sometimes. Mechanics these days are notoriously under-trained when it comes to this, and it is a real issue that will cause lower then normal oil pressures. here is more info on this...

When did your problem start?
Pre or post Overhaul?
What happened to warrant the overhaul? Wore out? Catastrophic failure?

Was the block properly Magnafluxed?

Stress or heat cracked oil galleries comes to mind.

RE: Another oil pressure thread
It’s a million mile motor and bought it with fresh overhaul.

Trying to find out all the possibilities here.

Cummins dealer did the inframe and said that when the motor was opened up that it was all good and didn’t need it but since it was already open at that point it only made since to put it back together with all new parts.
Certified cumins repair shop/dealer

All parts are Cummins parts from Cummins through Cummins dealer.

I suspect it had this issue before and was cause for the tear down and rebuild.

Head and all parts in head eliminated.
Rods and mains have been eliminated
Old oil pump and new oil pump same pressure
Regulator shimmed and same pressure before and after.
Pick up tube and o-ring replaced and good
Old pressure regulator and new regulator same pressure
All nozzles intact and appears to be good
Oil filter bypass changed and would agree improper install if pressure was higher in main galley.

I wasn’t there for the oilpump install so can’t personaly say the shims are in right.

The head is still getting a lot of oil which was my biggest concern.

I have no idea if the internals was magnafluxed at rebuild or not.

We are changing oil cooler and related parts to see if that fixes it.
As the cumins book says that’s the first place that can cause this condition.

Is there a galley plug up in the head that’s removed at overhaul that may have been overlooked and not put back in?

Thanks for the recommends on other places to look.
I was wondering about the air compressor and gears.

RE: Another oil pressure thread
After I check the air compressor, change oil cooler, check gears in gear case with no solution I guess it get dead headed back up to Oklahoma to the dealer for warranty.

I know I can’t drivr/run it like this.

Just my though. What if you have piece of rubber from destroyed oil filter O-ring somewhere in the oil sensor port?

RE: Another oil pressure thread
You said that cummins did the overhaul but when they opened it up it did not need it anyways???

Yes

Rods, mains, and cylinders were all in good shape.
The head my have been questionable but I’m just guessing based in miles.

RE: Another oil pressure thread
Ok

I just got back from the shop and there is 15 psi coming out of block so the problem is most likely between the pump and oil cooler. Soooooooi only thing that can leak there is pump shim or oil journal in the block as there is no oil use before the oil cooler.

We are going to pressure test the block back to the oil pump to try and locate the leak.
I fear the block May be cracked internally.
