I've been getting averages between 7.8-8.0 mpg for the past year and I still get nervous when I push my oil change from my usual 15,000 miles up to 16,000 miles because I'm still on the road (I do my own changes at home). If your down in the 6's then you should be looking at 7,000-10,000 mile intervals. Start lower just because the truck is new to you and could use the help flushing the neglect of is past life. 10,000 mile intervals would be more normal for mid 6's to low 7.

Oil samples are good, but they are really only a good tool for detecting changes over time. You can't usually look at a single sample in isolation and expect to devine what's going on. My opinion, best to sample at every oil change and watch the trends. Make notes about anything that could have had a significant impact on that oil and factor it in to your own analysis. That being said, don't ignore the other advise from here in regards to the samples posted.

When you settle on your preferred oil, be it Rotella (the most popular on this site) or Delo (my personal preference for my engine) also consider availability. Pick one and stick with it knowing that either you or your preferred shop will always have and use the same oil every time.

You might think a big fleet maintained vehicle would have a good solid service history (that was my naive thought once) but that is far from reality. Nearly all big fleets (including places like Ryder and Penske) adopt maintenance schedules that meet the bare minimum to keep the average truck running through their planned ownership period. So, if they plan to sell it at 500,000 miles then they will only do as much as needed to ensure it's useful life makes it to that point, and not a dime more. This is why we see ridiculous oil change (and grease too) intervals of 30,000+ miles and fleets using 10w30 instead of 10w40 (because it slightly increases fuel mileage at the expense of engine life expectancy - which is not their problem after they sell it). They buy trucks new at quantity discounts, milk them for every penny while equipping them with careless company drivers that have no stake in the equipment. Then turn around and sell them when they hit the predetermined end of life or when they show the first signs of an impending major repair. (The worst are the companies that thrive on offering these trucks as lease purchases, knowing full well that the financial burden will likely prevent the purchaser from completing the lease term.) Anyway, getting a little of topic here, sorry.

I agree with you all except what you said about Ryder, I worked there for 3 years and Ryder actually has a very extensive service plan for their trucks that they actually stick to very well. If you are renting/leasing a truck from them and pm time comes up then they are on the phone making you bring that truck in. The problem is their mechanics. Most of the guys take a short cut here and a short cut there and they don’t care that if they didn’t grease one part on this service and if it doesn’t get greased again till the next service then it just went 30,000 miles with no grease. They hire complete idiots with no experience , send them to a pm class, a tire class, and a safety class and turn them loose on trucks….. but their service intervals and the items that their services cover are actually spot on. They even have their dpf filters and doc’s baked every so many services, every so many services the entire aftertreatment system is inspected and tested by mechanics that were heavily trained in aftertreatment… I can vouch for this because I’ve done the training myself. It’s probably the only training Ive been through with a company that wasn’t a complete waste of time…. They even beat egr cleaning and health in your head. Ryder actually does their parts with their trucks. What makes the difference is the mechanics choices when they are working on them but that falls in with any company. Also when Ryder sells a truck everything is checked…. Absolutely everything. Even engine compression. If there is an issue with a truck it is supposed to be fixed. But once again that falls on the mechanic and whether he speaks up about it. I would say 80% do their job properly. So once again it’s not that Ryder as a company is out to f*** anyone. They actually want to do right….. don’t think I’m defending them. I don’t like the company for personal reasons. I’m just laying out the facts about them.

When I worked for Ryder in sc a few years back we ran 15/40 and depending on the situation the truck was in we ran them 15-20k. Maybe shits changed with them or maybe it was just the shop I was at. Idk

RE: Oil sample not looking good.
Had some 2015 Volvo's leased from ryder at my last job. They consistently did PM's around the 30k mi mark. Don't know first hand what oil they used though.

I'm sure not every single location and/or account is serviced the same, but I only know what I saw and heard from their mechanics up here in CT and that was enough to prevent me from looking at their used trucks when I started shopping around.

RE: Oil sample not looking good.
Will doing the gear oil addition have any side effects on intact emissions? I'll start doing that as well with changing to Rotella or Delo.

Currently searching for some one reliable to pull the bearings. Proving hard to find more then a basic parts changer here. May end up doing it myself but trying to maintain my warranty as they are supposedly a covered item.

If you're burning oil then it will increase the ash load on you DPF. The same additives that we get from mixing in the gear oil were purposefully removed from the motor oil because they weren't good for the DPF's longevity.

Thats what I thought. It hasn't been burning any, even on that long drain. I'll grab some and maybe drain some oil now to go ahead and add it.

They changed it in later part of 2013 I believe and still current with the 10w30, not sure on brand
but I know you can pour it on the camshaft/rockers during engine assy and it will not stay on the parts.
Why I always used the 80/90 lol
