Truck Won't Start!!
Ok, Like I said earlier, I'm stupid. For Some dumb reason I just couldn't help myself and had to try the whack a mole deal a second time and indeed it did make the truck shut off..... And now after two days of trying it will not start!

Truck is parked outside my house on a battery charger.... I live about 15 miles away from the international dealer.
Any suggestions folks?

>Buy a new ecm FROM THE STEALERS%IT ONLY!! ... + pay for them to pre-flash it with all truck settings, etc.. so that you can just hang it on the side of the engine and drive away. If that new ecm is dead on arrival because you did not pay extra to have them also flash it, and then tried to flash it yourself, ... then you are buying yet another new one. It is NOT worth the risk on a $2,000+ component.

Thank you rawze I completely understand what you're saying. My last post/question Was about anything that I can do to get this thing running so I can take it to the dealership to test the new ECM before leaving their property.

I don't think Rawze meant that you need to bring the truck to the dealer. Instead you have them bench flash the new ECM before leaving. If something fails in that process then they can replace the ECM before you even walk out the door. The purpose is to protect you from getting stuck with a defective ECM. Once it's successfully been flashed then you can just take it home and install it in the truck yourself. Just plug it in and go. If you need custom programming that can be done later, after the truck has run with the new ECM for at least 10 minutes.

It has been 10 days now since I wrapped on the case of my ecm which did cause the truck to shut off and it hasn't restarted since. I just now tried spraying a little starter fluid and truck acts like it wants to start....just momentarily it runs. I assume this means my ecm is getting power, correct?
A stearlership in my area can get me a new ecm for $2,700 and $189 to program.

RE: Random shut down
A diesel engine ignites fuel by compression, if you spray fuel (starting fluid) into it and crank it over yea its gonna try to start, regardless of what the ECM is doing.

What are you trying to accomplish by spraying starting fluid (bad idea) into it anyway?

Your ECM is confirmed bad, just replace it and move on

- Are you getting oil pressure (a few psi above zero) after several seconds of cranking in the dash?. If so then the ecm is not dead.

- Monitor the fuel pressure in insite while cranking. if you can, then the ecm is not dead. Fuel pressure must be above a certain psi before the engine will even try to open the injectors. On a CM871, that is roughly 60 psi minimum,.. but in all reality, mine gets above 100+ psi while cranking. It is not uncommon for the gear pump shaft on the 871's to snap internally ,and then the engine will not crank and run.. but it starts with ether, and shaft starts spinning just fast enough to keep it running sometimes.

- If the turbo is locked up at 100% closed, it will stumble a bit sometimes and then die. Making a 1/2" or so gap between the turbo and exhaust manifold will allow it to crank and run if its the turbo locked up.
